Watch “Jug Band Hokum” – the Documentary Film Kitty and I Directed in 2015
We did it! We released our old documentary film Jug Band Hokum on my YouTube channel – so you can watch it now without needing Amazon Prime! Here’s some “official” info (LOL)…
Jug Band Hokum is the feature length directorial debut from Emmy Award winning filmmakers and musicians Kitty and Jack Norton. Quirky, funny and downright bizarre, the film stars Anne Baggenstoss, Brooklynd Turner, Lil’ Majesty and Amnesia Starr. This highly anticipated documentary follows the eccentric lives of musicians competing to win a broken waffle iron in the 33rd Annual Minneapolis Battle of the Jug Bands.
The film features guest appearances by Garrison Keillor (of Prairie Home Companion fame), rap legends Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Charlie Parr, Dom Flemons (of the Carolina Chocolate Drops) and many others.
Film & Review Magazine described Jug Band Hokum as: “a real-life version of Christopher Guest’s A Mighty Wind with dashes of Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers. A wildly fun documentary!”
As if that wasn’t enough “official info”, here’s even more! Uff da!
Jug Band Hokum is a feature length film shot in the cinéma-vérité style with a production budget of $600.00. It’s so insane most people think it’s a mockumentary, but this is real life. Filmmaker Jack Norton grew up in Minneapolis and had always heard about the Annual Jug Band Battle where hundreds of jug band hopefuls from around North America drive to Minnesota every February to battle for a broken waffle iron. Despite never attending a battle, Norton figured that it sounded like such a bizarre event it must attract interesting characters. Thankfully, his gut instincts were correct. With raw energy and fearless youthful “run and gun” filmmaking methods, Jug Band Hokum takes cues from the filmmaking styles of Sean Baker and Harmony Korine, and is influenced by the comedic wit of Christopher Guest and Mike Judge.
There ya go. Hope you enjoy!
Cheers,
Jack
