Driving with Dave Van Ronk, Bob Dylan, and Fats Waller [VIDEO]
Here’s an ol’ Fats Waller tune I first learned by way of Dave Van Ronk. When I was a senior in high school, I had the honor of touring with Dave here in the Midwest. We rolled around Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, me driving him to the gigs, helping setting up, even picking a few songs together from time to time. Dave told me crazy stories about Bob Dylan. Like the time he and Bob were driving to a gig in a blizzard. The snow was so bad, they had to drive with the window down, Dave was driving, Bob was in the passenger seat, leaning out the window with a long walking stick, tapping the road to make sure he felt concrete. Zero visibility. Love that image of those two driving down the road together.
Miss hearing Dave’s stories. He taught me this tune and later I found an old recording by Fat Waller. Hope you enjoy.
